Until I joined the travel industry, I thought travel agents were for people who had a surplus of money, because it would cost more. When in reality, all the platforms online to schedule vacations for the public take a commission. Planning through a travel agent usually costs the same, but the commission is going towards an individual trying to make a living rather than to VRBO, Expedia, AirBnb, etc. If you plan a vacation on your own, you are giving those with a surplus of money more money through the commissions that the platform charges as fees. When the general public book their own vacations online, they are not cutting out the middleman. They are hiring a machine as their travel agent, who offers zero personal service. Online booking sites are still considered travel agencies. With a travel agent, you are given personalized service, and they do all the work for you. We get to know our clients and find out their wants and desires for their vacation. Nothing is planned without the client, since it is their vacation. Travel agents have evolved with the industry.
